Do you know why nearly every seabird (99%) will have eaten plastic by 2050? A major reason is that seabirds have an extremely good sense of smell. Their food; plankton produces a plume of dimethyl sulphide which seabirds such as the Fulmar or Shearwater can detect from several hundred miles away! The disturbing fact is plastic floating in the ocean for a while also produces a plume of dimethyl sulphide which the seabirds mistake for food.
The birds sucked into the whirlpool are cut out images of British seabirds. Around the outside of the whirlpool is a composition of 700 photographs that I took showing plastic rubbish in the different UK locations, such as beaches, streets, parks and trees. We are all too used to seeing these in our everyday environment.
